It’s Not Easy to be a Parent Most Especially in the 21st Century.

做父母真不容易，尤其是在二十一世纪。

The world is increasingly competitive, and parents want their children to be successful (and happy). Parents are so fearful of making wrong decisions for their children. As parents, we have dreams for our children’s future—a nice house, a healthy family, and successful careers.

世界竞争日益激烈，父母们希望自己的孩子成功（和快乐）。父母们害怕为孩子做出了错误的决定。父母们期待中孩子的未来是拥有一个成功的事业、健康的家庭和一个好房子。

After founding three K-8 schools in Silicon Valley, I sought to expand opportunities for innovative education in the world. The opportunity came when I met colleagues who also believed children need more education in addition to what they get from schools. Three years ago, we cofound an online after-school program and called this Playnovate. I have since been working with a team of smart, creative, and hardworking Chinese professionals in our company. 我在硅谷创立了三所K-8学校（中学和小学）之后，我开始寻找更广阔的推动创新教育的机会。当我遇到我的同事，他们相信孩子们除了从学校得到的东西之外，还需要接受更多更好的教育。

三年前，我们合作了一个在线课外教育的计划，并称之为玩创Lab（Playnovate）。我开始和这个聪明、有创造力、勤奋的团队一起工作，我们的网址是：www.playnovate.com。

I have been travelling to China and have grown more familiar with parents and children in this part of the world. I observed and interacted with students in schools, taught innovative summer camp courses, and hosted many conversations with Chinese parents. Through these activities I discovered that students in the USA and China have very similar exposure, interests, and abilities.

由于工作的关系，我开始经常到中国，对中国的父母和孩子越来越熟悉。我观察并和学校的学生互动，教授一些创新的夏令营或课后课程，我也开始参与一些和中国家长的论坛并与家长们对话沟通。通过这些活动，我发现在美国和中国的学生有非常相似的兴趣和能力。

As an educator, I have been interacting with parents on almost a daily basis. In Silicon Valley, my clients were highly educated and successful entrepreneurs, professors at Stanford University, lawyers, medical doctors and professionals of innovative global industries, who saw value in the experiential and creative education in these three schools. Through my experiences working with parents, I recognized the importance of sharing ideas on how to raise successful children.

作为一名教育家，我几乎每天都与父母互动。在硅谷，我的客户是受过良好教育和成功的企业家、斯坦福大学的教授、律师、医生、以及全球创新产业的专业人士，他们看到了我创立的这三所学校的创造性教育的价值。

通过与父母一起工作的经历，我认识到在培养成功孩子的过程中，分享教育方法是非常重要的。

This is the first of a series of weekly blogs that I will be writing for Chinese parents. It is my hope that I can help you with “parenting recipes.” Each blog (or recipe) will be focused on specific ideas, relevant trends in education, most especially in my favorite fields—STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) as well as education research on how to raise students’ intelligence levels and EQ which is the short term for social and emotional skills.

这是我将为中国父母写的系列博客中的第一篇文章。我希望我能帮助你掌握“养育孩子的秘诀”。

每篇博客（或秘诀）都将聚焦教育新理念及最新趋势，尤其是我最关注的领域——STEAM（科学、技术、工程、艺术和数学）以及关于如何培养学生的智力水平和提高学生社交技能及情感沟通的情商教育研究。

I may not be able to directly answer all of the questions, but these will inform me of what parent-readers want to know in regards strategies for responsible parenting.
